John Redwood is wrong about date rape

John Redwood is of the view that the government is wrong to regard "date rape" as seriously as assaults by strangers. It is not the government that is wrong Mr Redwood - it is you.

The truth is that date rape is one of the most common, and under reported forms of rape that happens and because the attacker is usually someone who is well known and trusted by the victim date rape can be extremely damaging in its effects.

Unlike John Redwood the government is a mass of contradictions. It was due to the government opposition that forced marriage - a prima facie vehicle for acquaintance rape if ever there was one - was not criminalised earlier this year. Square that circle. (Clue - you can't).

John Redwood is a Martian, but in this case may have a point.

He did not say date rape was ok, or even that it was not serious. I can’t see anyone short of a Saudi judge taking that stance.

I think what he was trying to argue was that stranger rape is a more serious physical threat and certainly often generally perceived as such by the population, than date rape. It is likely to catch more victims per rapist, be more physically violent, more physically harmful and strikes more at random making it perhaps more frightening.
